There’s no explanation needed on why it’s important to break away from technology regularly, if you remember life before addictive electronic devices. Think of it as a cleanse of your mind. After all, you’ll discover a clarity and peace you may never have known.
The reason why I must share this out is because nowadays most of us fall under the category of ‘Text Neck’.
Text Neck is an overuse syndrome or a repetitive stress injury to the neck. It’s caused by holding your head in a forward and downward position for extended periods of time. When you do the similar bad habit everyday, excessive amounts of tension are created in the deep muscles of your neck and across the shoulders. Eventually it causes both acute and chronic neck pain, or chronic headache. The increased prevalence of these pains is due to the increasing popularity and hours people spend on handheld devices such as smartphones, e-readers and tablets.
When we held our head upright, our ears are aligned with the centre of our shoulders, the weight of the average head exerts approximately 4-6kg of force (yes, you’re right, this is the weight of our head) through the muscles of the neck. But when your head is moved forward by one 1 inch, away from this neutral position, the weight of your head dramatically increases. Approximately 6 times as much force can be generated !!! And that is the same weight as an average 8 year old, can you imagine??
If left untreated, a ‘text neck’ can lead to the inflammation of the neck ligaments and nerve irritation, and you will feel
- Instant upper back or neck pain whenever using handheld device
- General shoulder pain and tightness
- Nagging headache made worse upon using laptop/computer
Hence, try looking up and making eye contact with others, see the sky, look at the ticket collector on the commuter train, take note of the people nearby when you’re eating lunch. Instead of burying your face in phone, lift your head up and be part of your environment.
Take a break, look up and be present in your surroundings.
